ECGA Creates Consumer Food Safety Video
The Eastern Cantaloupe Growers Association and the Georgia Watermelon Association are spreading food safety education from the farm into the kitchen by developing consumer food safety videos to go in retail produce departments.
A GDA/USDA block grant funded project, these brief, 45-second videos detail safe handling from the grocery store into the kitchen, reminding consumers to wash the fruit, utensils and counter tops. When editing is complete, each video will be published on the web and linked to a Quick-Response code that will be distributed via stickers or place cards in retail locations.
“Often times, our food safety focus stops with the grower and the packer,” said Samantha Kilgore, project coordinator for ECGA and GWA. “This is a great opportunity to remind consumers that they need to perform their due-diligence too, with simple and effective safe handling practices in their kitchen.”
These videos are expected to launch in May of 2014, when eastern grown cantaloupes and watermelons starting hitting stores. For questions or comments on this article, contact the ECGA office, at 706-845-9085.
